Design for Disaster Relief

Design Activism, 2010

In the fall of 2010 communication designer Tobias Ottahal and myself were invited to teach an interdisciplinary design course at the Visual Studies Department at Karachi University in Pakistan. Prior to our arrival to Karachi, there were disastrous floods, affecting the entire country. Our initial plan changed and we decided to teach a special topics class: Design for Disaster Relief. We also initiated a donation campaign to supply Charpais (cots) to nearby Relief camp setup for people migrating from affected areas in the country. With the help of our friends, family and an interactive website we raised more than three thousand dollars. We recorded our day to day experience on a project blog which can be viewed here.
